44a Key West - The Little White House

It was easy to find Kristin with her polka dot umbrella, and we decided that
the best way to get around this small island was by using the Trolley. But
first we visited the Little White House.
Aptly named not just because it was painted white, but this house played
host to it's most famous resident Harry S Truman. Truman inherited the
presidency from Roosevelt after he sadly passed away. This was a busy
period with the waning of World War II and the beginning of the cold war,
and his health started to suffer. Doctors told him to go somewhere warm and
relax. Choosing to spend some time in Key West at the Naval base, he
instantly fell in love.
They refurbished the home that was purpose built to house the Base commander
and paymaster to a home away from home for the president. Over 11 visits he
spent 175 days using this home as a retreat and functioning White House.
Many informal government meetings were held in the grounds and around his
specially built poker table. We weren't allowed to take photos, but
certainly enjoyed the tour of the house. Thanks to the accurate inventories
the navy kept they have been able to restore the home to just how it was
when the Truman's utilized it. Unfortunately no photo's allowed!
