34 Qaqatoq - Qwok a Tock

There was excitement today as we were adding a new country to our list.
Greenland, covered in more ice than Iceland and is a colony of Denmark. We
are now sailing in an area where spotting an iceberg or two was not
uncommon.
Now there was a little confusion up on deck as everyone checked their GPS on
their phones, because today we were supposed to call into Nanortalik and by
the looks of it we were way past the entrance into the fjord that led to it.
Damn, a missed port!!
We experienced a little mixed feeling when the Captain came over the ships
speakers and announced that due to bad windy conditions it would not be
possible to visit Nanortalik today. Even if we did make it in, by the
afternoon the weather would have deteriorated so much that tendering could
become dangerous. Instead he believed that the weather in Qaqatoq was much
better, so he decided to swap the ports around.
That should not have been a problem, except that in Qaqatoq we had a tour
arranged to visit the Ice Cap and float around all its bergy bits. Our tour
organiser was straight onto the internet trying to re schedule our tour.
Our boat was booked out, so they were frantically trying to find a
replacement. Just before we anchored we got word that we were to meet a
representative at 1pm on shore as they had found replacement. It was a bit
of a different story on land and the final arrangements ended up that we
would meet at 2.30pm to suit up for a Zodiac ride to the ice cap. ok we can
do that!
The Captain was not wrong, the weather in Qaqatoq, affectionally renamed by
those whose couldn't pronounced it to "Quack a duck", was picture perfect.
The beautiful blue skies contrasted wonderfully with the colourfully painted
houses. Fields of yellow buttercups mixed with purple lupins were a
photographer's dream come true. There was a wonderful display of carvings on
the rock face just near were we disembarked our tender.
We happily spent our time wondering around the village, killing time till
our trip in the afternoon. Despite the blue skies and the wonderful warm
sun, word came through as we gathered that the weather was turning and the
wind was kicking up the sea and the captain of our zodiac cancelled all
afternoon trips... damn. disappointed, we watched as the morning trip
return with grins from ear to ear. They did confirm though that the trip
back was rough with the boat pounding the waves to be back on time.
Thankfully we have a refund coming our way, but I still would have given
anything to have done the tour.
Well we still managed around 14,000 steps.. I am now up to 754,567
