36 b Corner Brook, Newfoundland - How friendly can one place be!!

Rewarding our hiking effort, we stopped for a coffee at the ever-popular
Tim Hortons, a lite version of Starbucks and a Macdonald's drive-through
mixed together.
The one thing that Australia and Corner Brook have in common is Captain
James Cook. It was he who first surveyed and recorded the geography of this
area. The Captain Cook Monument sits high on the hill overlooking the town
and according to his plaque "The charting of this coastline was the first
scientific, large scale, hydrographic survey to use precise triangulation to
establish land outlines." And furthermore "The choice of Cook to carry out
Pacific exploration was the result of this success in Newfoundland." No
wonder everyone was so nice to us.
It was a big steep walk up to the Monument and we enquired at Tim's about
where to find a taxi "I will call one for you", "no, no it is fine just
direct us to a taxi rank" I replied not wanting to be a bother. We walked
out the doors and tried to get our bearings to follow our directions.
"Looking for something?" asked the young man with the ear rings, nose rings
and the jeans whose crutch hung below his knees. "taxi, let me call one for
you"
Stubbornly we persevered to find our own taxi. bad choice as all the taxis
were already booked by the rest of ship. Our only option was to climb the
hill. Can I just say that these Newfie's as they affectionately call
themselves, are just so polite. Cross or even look like you are going to
cross the street, and every car or truck will stop and wait for you pass, no
matter how wide or busy the road is. But that is not all, as we walked
our way along the roads that weaved their way up the hill, a car stopped and
offered us a ride to the top. YAY.. How great is that! And what was even
better once we started our descent someone else stopped to take us down.
This wasn't just us, many others told of these great Samaritans driving
around offering rides. Even those who wanted to go to another iconic
landmark "Walmart" were given lifts.
